Bliss and Tommy's
Alarmingly, one in four families will lose a baby during pregnancy or at birth and one in eight babies will be born sick or premature - that's 80,000 babies each year. Two years ago Candis introduced Family Start, a health initiative that brings together two major baby charities, Bliss and Tommy's. The aim is simple - to work together to help parents-to-be through pregnancy and beyond, and to achieve a much happier outcome for all babies. To date, Candis has donated over £3 million to Family Start.
"Tommy's and Bliss complement each other very
well," says Jane Brewin, chief executive of Tommy's.
"We're both concerned with giving every baby the best
quality of life. The focus of Tommy's is on the health of baby
during pregnancy, from conception to birth; Bliss concentrates on
the health of a baby once they are born.
"Together, we have the power to make a huge difference to the
lives of thousands of babies conceived each year in the UK. With
regular funding from Candis Club, we're determined to ensure
that more babies have the absolute best start in life."
As well as raising vital funds for Bliss and Tommy's, every issue of Candis magazine features a story from a family that has been helped by one of the charities. Read the latest stories here
Money received from Candis Club helps Bliss and Tommy's to provide...
- a wide range of leaflets
- websites that offer a wealth of information and support
- special helplines for parents (Bliss) and expectant mothers (Tommy's)
- funding for research and training programmes
- information and support for neonatal staff and midwives
Candis Club also regularly supports Bliss and Tommy's on an individual basis, whether that be by donating equipment such as breast pumps to Bliss or with support for Tommy's Pregnancy Health Month and Parent Friendly Awards.
Family Start receives 23% of all Candis Club donations. From October 2008 to October 2009 Candis expects to give a further £200,000 to help Bliss and Tommy's work together to achieve better outcomes for babies all over the UK.
