It seems like the weeks have flown by, with Christmas almost on
our doorstep. I haven't got much shopping done and need to get
that sorted as soon as possible, before there's the usual
panic.
It's also
the time of year when party invitations are sent out, which makes
me cringe because of one fateful event three years ago. Pete and I,
along with Pete's boss and wife, were invited to the
Mayor's Ball. I could hardly contain my excitement, as I'd
never been to a ball before. I had visions of beautiful gowns and
grandeur. I asked Pete to check whether the dress was formal and he
assured me the ladies would all be wearing full-length dresses.
Fantastic, I could go the whole hog and get a wonderful gown. I
scoured the internet for the perfect dress at a reasonable price,
and managed to find a beautiful strapless, full skirted gown.
I'm not usually one for going over the top, but I was desperate
to fit in so I went for something more fancy than I normally would.
After all, it was a formal ball. I even ordered a tiara headpiece
to complement the look. As the day drew closer, I was slightly
nervous about being overdressed, but each time I mentioned this to
Pete, he reassured me again that everyone would be dressed up.
As we pulled up at the venue, I noticed a lot of 'normally'
dressed people getting out of their cars, heading towards the hall.
Once we stepped inside, it felt like the whole place fell silent -
all eyes were on me! I looked nervously at Pete, who had that
'deer in the headlights' look on his face. My first
reaction was to run back out of the door, and my second was to kick
Pete in the shins, but I opted for the third, and headed towards
the toilets. As I strutted off, Pete asked where I was going and I
blurted that I was off to the ladies' to take my ****ing tiara
off! I don't normally use bad language but, at this point, I
didn't care. Shortly after I reappeared, we were greeted by
Pete's boss and his wife. I couldn't escape and spent the
whole of the night wishing the floor would open up and swallow me.
Don't get me wrong, people were a bit dressed up, in suits and
dresses, but NOT like I was. I stayed at the table, slowly trying
to slide down so no one could see me. But after drinking copious
amounts of wine, I had no choice but to go to the ladies again,
where I was met by a group of young women, sniggering and
whispering among themselves about what pantomime I had just
auditioned for!
Needless to say, the evening couldn't end soon enough. I
couldn't wait to get that stupid dress off and fling it
somewhere. I felt like a trussed-up Christmas turkey - so
that's why balls are no longer my cup of tea!
I did eventually speak to Pete again, but only when he could look
me in the eye without trying not to laugh...
