In light of the
'doom and gloom' atmosphere that has been hanging around
the past few weeks at home, I decided that since Pete is still
working, we should act like nothing's changed and book a
weekend away in the caravan. We found a nice site, just under an
hour's drive away, that had a heated indoor pool. I felt sure
the weather would be rubbish, so this way we would have swimming to
occupy the three younger children, should an 'in caravan'
riot erupt.
Well, Pete brought the caravan home after work on Friday and we
excitedly loaded up and set off. I had packed everything but forgot
a bottle of wine, which I felt would be a nice touch and aid the
relaxation process, if that was ever possible! I asked Pete whether
he'd mind if we stopped at the local Co-op on the way. He
sighed, just wanting to get on, but relented none the less. Having
pulled to the side of the road, I rushed off to make sure I
didn't hold us all up any longer than necessary. As I hurried
back to the car I noticed that one of the tyres on the caravan
looked rather flat...
I mentioned this to Pete and he got out to check. We couldn't
do anything on the side of the road so pulled up to the village
green. Unbelievably, the tyre was going down as we looked. We both
looked at each other and blurted out together, "Not
again!"
Having been a beautiful day, to add insult to injury, it had now
decided to rain. Poor Pete tried to change the tyre, but needed a
larger spanner, so I called my friend and her husband brought one
over. We were so grateful and within the hour the spare tyre was
on. We were off again, except this time Pete was filthy and wet. I
did try to say it was a godsend that I had insisted on stopping for
a bottle of wine as we wouldn't have noticed the tyre until,
perhaps, it shot off just like the wheel on our last caravan. I got
a quiet glare as a response. I didn't mention it again!
Despite the rocky start, we arrived at the park and the children
were so excited. It was just what the doctor had ordered and with
the weather being glorious, it has been a real tonic for us all.
We have decided to return in a few weeks time, so have that to look
forward to.
Now I'm back it's time to sort through all the washing and
try to locate Harry's school shoes, which seem to have
mysteriously disappeared off the face of the earth. This can only
mean one thing... he doesn't want to go to school tomorrow.
Argh!
