I didn't
have a good start to last week and, on Wednesday, I had yet another
problematic and also sad day. Firstly, Callum took the bus back to
our old village to meet me, as I was waiting for Mackenna's
confirmation class to end. After Monday's incident, I wanted
him where I could see him.
Unfortunately, this happens to be the bus that 'Noo Noo
Head' takes, along with Callum's best friend, Lee. As
Mackenna came out of the vicarage, Callum was walking up the hill
with Lee, looking really pale. When I asked him if he was alright,
he burst into tears. Apparently, he had got on the bus first and
saved a seat for Lee, when the bully-boy got on and sat next to
Callum, not letting him get up to sit with Lee. Callum sat quietly
for a while, then decided to try to stand up for himself, which
resulted in Callum getting punched in the head. I was incensed. I
called the school immediately to let them know, but could only get
an answerphone. I couldn't sleep that night and couldn't
wait to call on my way to work the following morning. The teacher
assured me it would be "dealt with appropriately" and she
would get back to me in a couple of days. So far, from what I can
gather, the lad got a 30-minute detention and has been told to not
talk to Callum for a week. Well, I'm not the sort of parent to
call the school for every little thing but I do feel a bit let
down. I have been in a real state as to whether I should talk to
this child's mother, but don't want to do the wrong thing.
From what I've heard, she won't hear a bad word against her
obnoxious son, even though other people have complained to her
before. Anyway, I will call the school tomorrow, as that will have
given them the couple of days they needed, and ask them whether
they at least notified his parents.
Then I heard some very sad news that day. A little boy's mum in
Harrison's class finally lost her battle against cancer and,
even though I never spoke to her, I always said a prayer for her,
as I could only imagine what she was going through. This really
saddened me and brought into perspective all the stupid stuff that
I worry about and its real importance - or not, for that
matter.
