Unwelcome visitors

Unwelcome visitorsLast week was extremely tiring, for some reason. Most days, I really felt I was struggling to get going. Thank goodness it's half term this week. Having said that, I am back to refereeing the nitwits and trying not to go grey in the process! Please let the weather be OK, so we can get some days outside...

It was Mackenna's birthday on Saturday and I knew she wanted her ears pierced, so I found a place that could do it on Friday evening, as a surprise. She was so excited when we got there and she realised what was happening. The lady was lovely; so patient and kind. Mackenna sat, beaming in the chair, with Pete guarding Harry outside the shop, while I gazed with pride at my daughter. I stood closer for support and noticed what I thought was a greenfly in her hair. As I picked it out, I nearly fainted when I realised it was a nit! As I discreetly leaned in to have a closer look, while the lady loaded up her piercing gun, I was astonished to see Mackenna's hair was alive with nits - it looked as though her whole head of hair was moving. Well, I didn't know whether to just grab her and bolt out of the door, in order to prevent any embarrassment, or just grin and bear it, hoping the technician didn't notice - though it would have been a miracle if she didn't.

I stood there, face burning, and afterwards, I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
We paid and rushed out, with me trying to tell Pete why we needed to rush to the late night supermarket. I'd promised him fish and chips for tea, so I had to tell him I'd pick up a salad instead! Needless to say, we were up very late, dousing and combing and shampooing and disinfecting. Short of putting a sheep dip outside the front door, I felt sure I had eliminated any more little beasties; with the exception of Harry of course.

On Saturday morning, I took Mackenna (now de-loused) down to the Outlet Mall for her to spend her birthday money and we browsed through the shops all day. It was a lovely day and we finished it off with her birthday cake and candles.

As for the other Crabbs, we are all rattling along. Kelvin is booking a holiday abroad as I type, periodically calling down to ask me what's the earliest I could drive him and Laura to the airport, which is marginally concerning. Colby continues to take her driving lessons, with the dreaded theory test next week. Madison, since passing her test last week, has been popping back and forth with Davy and has made a comment about Davy moving in with us - I'm not sure if she was joking or not. Also, she is adamant that she is going to order a double mattress, ready to get up into the attic when Kelvin eventually moves out. However, there is no way she will fit one up there, no matter how hard anyone tries. I have tried to tell her and hopefully, she'll listen - otherwise, I have visions of Pete and I doing some sort of Laurel and Hardy comedy routine; but instead of a piano up the staircase, it will be a thumping great mattress!

Kyle is doing much better now, as he has got another car, having written off the second one a couple of weeks ago. He is trying to get a better job and still lives with his uncle for the time being, which is surprising, considering that he accidentally flicked his cigarette into the garden and burnt his fence down a while back. He hasn't mentioned moving back here recently, so hopefully he's settling down again, bless him.

Anyway, I am going to try to get some feeling back into my arms, having helped Pete cut the hedge this afternoon. Here's to the half-term madness...
