September 2008 - Money matters

With a recession looming, most people are feeling the pinch and starting to tighten their belts. But whose responsibility is it to help ease the situation?

How bad is it? How much worse will it get? No one knows. Forecasts range from a relatively mild downturn to some doomsters predicting a full-blown monster of a depression. Choose your economist and take your pick.

So far we know that food and fuel prices have jumped up and will not fall. But it is by no means the same for everyone. This hits the low paid much harder as a much greater slice of their money goes on food and fuel. Those better off in the top tax band spend a pretty small proportion of their incomes on these essentials things.
