Thankfully a charity has come up with a solution to help poorly youngsters keep smiling.
Theodora Children’s Trust train performance artists to become ‘Giggle Doctors’, who visit children in 17 hospital wards and charitable homes throughout England and Wales.
With names like, Dr Yoho, Dr Bungee and Dr Wonderpants, the Giggle Doctors have a very important task – to make children laugh!
They do this by transforming the hospital ward into a magical play space, with balloons, games and singing – anything to make the children smile. The Giggle Doctors are specially trained to work in a hospital environment, and with children who are sometimes suffering from life-threatening illnesses.
And now even more children will get a visit from one of the team, thanks to the Candis Big Give!
Theodora Children’s Trust raised £80,000 in the initiative, and the money will be used to fund the visits of eight new Giggle Doctors, who completed their training in 2011. This means 20,000 more children a year will be visited by one of the team, bringing the total number of children they collectively see to 70,000!
Sarika Brown, Executive Director of Theodora Children’s Trust, says: “The Big Give challenge provided us with the opportunity to raise a huge amount of money in just one week. As a small charity, we really notice every pound that comes in and large donations like those made in the Big Give are quite rare.
“The money raised is so important because not only does it allow us to continue spreading happiness wherever we can, but it also enables us to send our newly trained Giggle Doctors to visit even more children in hospital. Thank you Candis and The Big Give for making this possible.”
