I decided to undertake the '3 peaks challenge' which was
quite a task, as I wasn't used to climbing, only running and
gym work. So I got into training and with the lads from the
building contractors I work for in Portsmouth, started training
climbs on Butser Hill and at Christmas in the snow, we climbed the
Brecon Beacons.
So, whilst I was undertaking all this training, I thought I might as well make it worthwhile, perhaps for a deserving charity. So from Candis magazine, after reading about Children's Hospices UK, I thought I would do it for them, as I have two grown up children and two grandchildren now, who are all healthy, and there are plenty of people that are not as lucky as me!
We set off in June late at night and had a minibus with two designated drivers and a helper at hand. We started the climbing of Ben Nevis at 5pm the next day - this took me 4 hours and 51 minutes to complete and was very hard work and very cold as there was a lot of snow at the top!
We drove down to the Lake District, and slept and ate on the bus ready for the next leg, which was Scafell Pike - which I managed to climb in 3 hours and 39 minutes. I was very pleased with that, as I even managed to leave some of the lads behind too! Then on again, resting on the bus and eating again, to climb Snowdon. I found this most arduous as I was weary by then and it was very hard work, this took me 4 hours and 47 minutes.
So all in all I was overjoyed to even complete this challenge.
It was a great achievement. I also managed to raise £365.00
for Children's Hospices too.
