Whenever
possible, Brad Pitt likes to make films with people he already
knows. Take Cate Blanchett, for instance, his co-star in the
forthcoming The curious case of Benjamin Button, with whom he
worked two years ago in the critically acclaimed epic,
Babel.
"When I heard Cate was going to be in this film, I couldn't say no," he says today, smiling at the thought of his Australian co-star, who has also become a good friend along the way. We are on the Warner Brothers lot in Hollywood, and Brad is looking ridiculously handsome in a 1920's-style tweed three-piece suit - no, it's not for a role, he says cheerfully, he just felt like wearing it - with his hair cut short and clean around his boyish face. "She and I work well together - we have an automatic rapport and great respect for each other. Plus, we get a kick out of arguing with each other, which is fun!"
Cate, who I meet later that day, agrees. "Brad's one of
the easiest people to work with," she says.
"He gets on so well with women - which is great for me for
obvious reasons! He has such openness and curiosity, and a
fantastic sense of humour. I'd work with him any day of the
week."
A clue to any actor's personality is how often people are willing to work with them again - and a quick glance at Brad's film résumé will show that Cate isn't the only one who is happy to share screen time with him. There is his on-screen partnership with George Clooney, literally his partner in crime in all three Ocean's movies, with whom he also starred last year in Burn after reading.
George and Brad are as good friends off the screen as on, hanging out, visiting each other's homes, and openly bringing the other such entertainment just by being themselves, that neither is able even to mention the other without including some form of insult. "I'm so sorry," Brad once murmured, shaking his head sympathetically when I mentioned I had talked to George. Meanwhile, George refers to him laconically as 'Pretty Boy Pitt', and has been known to bellow delightedly, "I hate the guy!" Among males, praise does not come higher than that.
