Most women would
happily put Colin Firth at the top of their Christmas wish list
and, after getting up close and personal with this loving family
man, Gabrielle Donnelly completely understands why
There's something about Colin Firth that's somehow rather Christmassy. Admittedly, this is partly down to the indelible memory of him wearing those terrible Christmas sweaters in Bridget Jones's Diary. But there's more to it than that. He exudes a sense of calm bonhomie, an atmosphere of walnuts cracked around a blazing log fire with the smell of pine in the air and mince pies baking in the oven, piles of gifts heaped high under the tree, Santa on the roof, church bells ringing and all being well with the world.
It's no surprise, then, to learn that he will be part of A Christmas Carol, this season's animated film version of Dickens' beloved classic, with Jim Carrey playing the part of Scrooge, and Colin almost too perfectly cast as Scrooge's genial nephew, Fred.
And it's even less of a surprise to learn, when I meet up with Colin for a chat in Los Angeles, that, when it comes to Christmas, yes, he is a dyed-in-the-wool fan.
"And the best thing about it these days is watching the children," he says smiling affectionately, referring to his two small sons, Luca, 8, and Matteo, 6. "That's the wonderful thing about having children, isn't it? You love things like Christmas when you're a child and then you grow up and get rather sad and jaded about them. But once you have children, you get to live the holidays all over again through them. I used to love Christmas as a boy. I was terribly upset when I found out there was no Father Christmas... which actually happened quite recently!"

"but you are wrong Colin there is a Father Christmas, especially when you believe in the MAGIC of Christmas!"
