This month sees Johnny Depp reprise the role that
launched him into superstardom. He tells Gabrielle Donnelly why,
despite the luxuries that fame affords him, family downtime is more
precious than any treasure trove.
Johnny Depp has had one of
those life-changing moments - his little girl has discovered boys.
"And she's only 11," he says, raising his eyebrows in
mostly - but not entirely - mock horror when we meet for tea in the
posh Four Seasons hotel in Beverly Hills. "I mean my daughter
is a very sophisticated 11. She has been acting like a teenager for
some time now, and she's left her Barbie-doll ways far behind.
I didn't think that crushes on boys would arrive just yet - but
they have.
"I was doing a press conference the other day, and Justin Bieber was in the hotel too, so he popped in to say hi, bless him, which was very nice. And when I went home and told the kiddies, Lily turned into a walking thermometer - she went all colours! And I realised she has a crush on him! This is very upsetting for me. Lily and Jack are growing up far too fast."
Johnny Depp himself will turn 48 this year. His movies rake in millions of dollars worldwide and the critics praise his range of work. He lives in a rambling farmhouse set on 45 acres in the South of France and he owns his own island in the Caribbean. A respected amateur musician and painter, his friends have included Keith Richards, Tim Burton and the late Marlon Brando, who he still talks about with great affection. But ask which is the most important side of him and he won't hesitate to answer: the family man.
"The two things that really matter to me are to be a good
man and a good dad," he says. "If along the way I can do
some interesting work in my profession, or maybe produce something
that's a little outside of what others are doing, then, boy,
I'm blessed. But the most important part is the family. All the
rest is just smoke and mirrors. If my kids tell me I'm the best
daddy in the world, then that's the best compliment I could
ever hope to receive, hands down. Even if they are a little bit
biased, especially at Christmas!"
He's a very nice man is Johnny Depp, a gentle, soft-spoken sort
of a chap who ambles into the room in an unusual assortment of
clothes: scruffy jeans, a bluegrey T-shirt, light blue denim shirt,
brown jacket - which he somehow manages to make look dashing - his
teeth cheerfully glinting with the temporary gold caps he had
implanted for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow and often forgets to
remove for weeks on end.
