Not just a Hollywood mover and shaker, John Travolta's achievements go much further than acting. TIFFANY ROSE talks planes, heartache and unique methods of parenting with him
Were there to be
an Oscar given for the biggest heart in Hollywood, John Travolta
would win. The man is a selfless hero, always putting the welfare
of others before himself. Without hesitation, he piloted his own
plane with his wife, actress Kelly Preston, to hand deliver medical
supplies and food to victims of the Haiti earthquake. This is not
the first time John has lent a helping hand in a time of crisis. He
also flew aid to the 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina survivors.
These acts of kindness come naturally to John, who has generously donated huge sums of money to charities over the years. "I had the means to take supplies to Haiti. It was a privilege," he smiles. "I sent two planes, one of which I flew. My church (the Church of Scientology) arranged for the supplies and 22 doctors to ride with me on the plane. We had diapers, milk, baby formula, and whatever was needed for them to perform operations and to feed the kids. We heard that hundreds of lives were saved."
A self-confessed 'aviator geek', he holds a commercial pilot's licence and has, on occasion, flown himself from LA to interviews in London and Sydney. The 56-year-old movie star has such a passion for flying that he modelled his Florida residence on a 50s' airport lounge, complete with a mock flight tower and a mile-and-a-half runway, parking his two luxury 707 planes in the driveway, with a live-in flight crew.
