Rose and Jack - the beautiful heiress and the boy from below decks - who found each other on the Titanic, while the waves raged, the iceberg loomed and we all worked through our tissue supply at the plight of the two, so beautiful, so young, so hopelessly in love.
It was also, for the two young stars of the movie, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, the beginning of something else. Not romance, but something in many ways as important, and, in Hollywood circles, definitely more unusual - a deep and genuine friendship that has lasted to this day.
"Kate is one of my dearest and closest friends, and has stayed that way for many years," says Leonardo firmly when we meet in Beverly Hills. "Friends are very important to me, and it comes with the territory of being in this business that sometimes you're going to meet people who aren't as genuine as they might seem. We all deal with that, and one way of doing it is to focus on the people you know are dependable, people you know you can trust. Kate is one of those."
Pretty as an English rose, Kate Winslet smiles affectionately as
she talks of her former co-star. "He's just Leo, and
always will be," she says simply. "We actually lost touch
with each other at one point for about four or five years. There
was no reason for it - we just lost each other's phone numbers
and time went by as it does. And then something wonderful happened
on my birthday - out of the blue, I received a beautiful
arrangement of flowers with a note inside saying,
'I just remembered it was your birthday and wanted to say I
miss you.' It was from Leo, and of course I called him, and
we've been in touch regularly ever since. We don't always
get to see each other as much as we'd like to because we both
travel a lot, but we're always talking on the phone. He's a
very special person in my life. I love him."
