Alan Titchmarsh
Gardening guru, much-loved
TV personality and broadcaster, Alan Titchmarsh, 61, has penned
over 50 books. His latest is a memoir, When I Was A Nipper, which
is a nostalgic and entertaining trip back to his Yorkshire roots.
The best thing my parents ever taught me is...
Determination - never giving up. But also to be
respectful. I grew up in a small working class family and it was
really about old-fashioned manners and respecting your elders,
which a lot of people either think are unnecessary or a bit dull
today.
My teen idol was...
TV gardener Percy Thrower. It's a bit sad
really - most people from my era would probably say Elvis Presley!
One memory that still makes me smile today is...
Teaching myself to drive a car by sitting at the
piano. I used the three pedals of the instrument as clutch,
accelerator and brake, and a walking stick in an upturned flowerpot
as a gear leaver - and I passed first time!
My secret talent is...
Bell ringing - it's a Sunday hobby.
I'm no good at...
Maths. I can do sums, but maths - algebra and
trigonometry - oh no! You're meant to be either good with words
or good with numbers. Well, I can honestly say I'm definitely
better with words!
I know it's not good for me, but I do like...
Very finely cut French fries.
