Last word with Dr Hilary Jones

Dr Hilary Jones, 56, has been Britain's best-known TV doctor for 25 years. He has also written several books. He currently lives in Kent with his partner, fitness expert Dee Thresher, and is the father of five children

dr hilary jonesWhat's your strongest childhood memory?
Fighting with my three brothers over plates of chips. We were all heavily into sport, and when we came home starving my mum would prepare a pyramid of chips and we'd fall on them. She once tried to break us up and broke her thumb! We've all become much more sophisticated now - we only fight over sea bass.

What keeps you up at night?
Nothing really. As health editor of Daybreak I've been spending a lot of time filming news stories, then there's my medical work, so it's an early start and a late finish. I only get about four hours' sleep a night now. I used to lie awake, worrying about the day just gone or the day coming. These days I'm asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow.

What are your pet hates?
Speed bumps. We spent 100 years building roads to be flat, and now some idiot's put bumps all over them. And unpainted concrete should be banned - it looks like
a war-zone. I also hate petty bureaucracy, Big Brother, rap music and blancmange.

Can you cook?
Not at all! I can't cook anything. My signature dish is a bowl of Frosties. Luckily though my partner, Dee, is Cypriot and she's a great cook. She just throws it all together really fast and it's always brilliant.

What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?
At 17, I hitchhiked to the South of France to tell a lovely French girl that I'd fallen in love with her. But when I finally arrived, her boyfriend opened the door. I never did tell her - I just hitchhiked home again.
