Did you enjoy your childhood?
Yes, it was wonderful! It was full of music from the beginning. I was born into a mining community in South Yorkshire, and everyone had a great love of music. I come from a musical family in the first place; my parents both had fantastic voices, and they sang and played instruments all the time.
What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
Don't worry about what others think of you; be yourself. It took me a long time to learn that. At the Royal Academy of Music, where I studied, I tried to conform to a stereotype and it took a lot of courage to become the individual that I am now.
