Last word with Nanette Newman
Actress Nanette Newman, 76, is best known for film roles
such as International Velvet, appearing in Fairy Liquid adverts and
now as a prolific writer of children's books.
What advice
would you give your 16-year-old self?
From a young age I learnt to dance, showed a bit of
promise and never explored a career outside show business and so
I'd say, try everything. The more you try things the more
you'll suddenly start to realise what you want to do. Having
said that, I've had a wonderful life.
What's your earliest memory?
Watching my parents, who were in variety, perform
at seaside resorts. I remember travelling around with them and
having a lovely time.
What simple pleasure could you never be without?
My husband, (film director Bryan Forbes), children
(TV presenter Emma Forbes and journalist Sarah Standing) and
grandchildren. They are the absolute joy of my life.
Who would attend your dream dinner party?
Obviously, my family. Katharine Hepburn too. I
worked with her on The Madwoman of Chaillot, a film my husband
directed. She was a wonderful friend and a very positive person.
I'd also invite Kenneth Branagh, one of Britain's best
actors; Madame de Pompadour, a woman of great taste and style; and
David Cameron, to discuss politics.
What food do you really hate?
Any offal - kidneys, hearts, brains, tripe. This
year I was asked to do, I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. I
said no because the thought of having to eat something like
kangaroo penis would send me into intensive care.
