This month - Making a difference
How you and Candis Club work together to change lives
When Candis reader Antoinette Williamson, wrote to tell us about the work Whizz-Kidz has done for her disabled son, Candis Club decided to make a donation to the charity.
Davaun Williamson, 15,
suffered brain damage at birth, causing severe disability.
Wheelchair bound and unable to do anything for himself his mum,
Antoinette, is his full-time carer. Davaun was entirely reliant on
her until he was introduced to Whizz-Kidz, a charity that works to
change disabled children's lives.
Aged eight at the time, it was the beginning of a transformation in
Davaun's life as the charity provided him with customised
mobility equipment, wheelchair training and advice. "Without
Whizz-Kidz, Davaun, and many other children, would spend the rest
of their lives being pushed around in their wheelchairs, never
experiencing the freedom and independence most of us take for
granted," says Antoinette.
Davaun is also a Whizz-Kidz ambassador and part of a network that
aims to develop independence, life skills and employment
opportunities, assisting young disabled people in their transition
towards adulthood. He loves taking part in the activities the
charity organises for school holidays and is also involved in
fundraising and campaigning for it. Kay Aslett, regional fundraiser
at Whizz-Kidz, said, "The difference that independent mobility
makes to a disabled child's life is immeasureable. Every time
we deliver a new piece of mobility equipment, the transformation is
instant. Self-esteem improves and true personalities shine through.
Independent mobility means children can go out and play, attend
mainstream schools and take part in sport."
Whizz-Kidz received £5,000 from Candis Club, which has
been used towards new mobility equipment for Nathan and Cerys
Giles.
