November 2009 - Ask me anything?

Denise"I can't hold down a job"

I am 32 years of age and have lost practically every job that I have worked in and my relationship is at breaking point as a result of my being unable to find suitable employment. I left school with barely any qualifications and hate to admit I'm still living with my parents. My girlfriend and I would love to move in together but right now it doesn't seem possible.

I have tried to seek help. I was formerly a part-time student at a college and I asked my lecturer if I could speak to her. I went through my school history and she put me in touch with an expert. The result indicated that I may have borderline dyslexia or dyspraxia. I have had to quit college because of my problem, and my GP said he couldn't help as the problem was educational rather than medical. I am waiting to hear back from an expert who my job centre put me in touch with, but I feel that I can't wait any longer. Dan

DENISE SAYS: Both the conditions you describe need not be bars to eventual success in the jobs field. You write a good letter and have determination. That's a very good start but now you need help. Unless that expert comes back with real help I suggest you contact The Diversity Group (www.thediversitygroup.co.uk; 0151 708 5775). The Group's primary objective is to promote equal opportunities to people from every kind of background or lifestyle, including race, gender, disability, age, faith and sexual orientation. They can advise you on job opportunities and training courses and I would be very happy to hear how you get on. You deserve success.
