"
I want to fall in
love"
I have just come out of a five-year relationship, and before that I
was in a relationship for 19 years. When the last woman left me she
said, "You're only upset because your comfort zone has
gone." Both times it was the women ending it but, if I'm
honest, I really wasn't that bothered so why am I upset now?
Someone once told me that I have never been in love. I don't
know if this is true or not but I really would appreciate your
advice. Roddy
DENISE SAYS: I think 'someone' had it
right. You like companionship and if the person you're with is
not unpleasant you'll just stay put rather than face life
alone. In time, the woman you're with realises there's no
love and leaves. It will happen again if you drift into another
'something is better than nothing' situation, but it
doesn't have to be like this. First of all you have to learn to
live comfortably on your own so you are not afraid of leaving if
things don't work out. I'm guessing you probably went into
the first relationship from your parents' home and then
straight into the second, so being on your own will be a new
experience for you but it's important you persevere. You need
to be very careful before you enter into another relationship. I
suggest you make friends of both sexes. Your local library will
have details of what's going on in the area so you can get out
and meet new people. Alternatively, Future Friends (01643 708008),
which is part of non-profit organisation Single Concern, can put
you in touch with genuine people of all ages. If you want to
experience the real thing for the first time you need to make an
effort and stop wasting not only your own time, but another
woman's too,
in another loveless relationship.
