Diane: “Yes, I watch The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent with my son and daughter and we’re always hooked for the entire series. I find it creates a bond between us because we each have our favourite contestants, so it becomes a real talking point.”

Jane: “I do enjoy watching The X Factor with my niece. I tend to record it though, so I can skip through and just watch the performances.”

Alannah: “I watch The X Factor too and find myself getting pretty hooked on it. It’s quite rare now to meet people who don’t watch it.”

Comments:

" As a music teacher, I am finding more and more that my students expect to achieve great things with very little effort. The vast majority of the acts on these programmes have very little talent (after all, it makes better TV if there are loads of inadequate acts to laugh at), and their performances are made to look better with flashy costumes and background dancers. I have taught so many talented kids who are still struggling to make it in various areas of music and performing arts. These programmes make kids think that anyone with a modicum of talent can be successful without the massive amount of work it really takes."
