June 2011... On the couch

Do we care more about soap opera characters than our own family?

This month, we ask three Candis readers if people spend too much time focusing on events in their favourite soaps instead of real life...

READER PROFILES:

Gwen Debate June
Gwen Kokburg, 57 -
A retired teacher from Cheshire, Gwen enjoys watching the soaps in her spare time but thinks some people can take them too seriously, losing sight of what is real

Bernie debate June
Bernie Adams, 51-
A counsellor from Warrington, Bernie thinks that most people use soaps as a means of escaping issues and events that are going on in their own lives

Eva Debate June
Eva Von Mitzka, 51 - A self-employed property manager from London, Eva rarely watches TV and thinks people should focus on their own reality rather than fictional soaps

Do you enjoy watching soap operas?

Gwen
: "Now I'm retired I watch Coronation Street and Emmerdale and I have to admit, I feel quite miffed if I miss one of them."

Bernie: "I record two soaps and watch them when I can. But unless there's a really gripping storyline, I don't mind if I miss an episode."

Eva: "I used to watch quite a few soaps about 15 years ago, when I was living with a partner who loved them all. I remember how
easy it was to get hooked on them, but then when we split up I stopped watching them altogether."

Do soaps take up too much of our time and thoughts?

Eva:
"Lots of people I work with are very into watching soaps and spend ages talking about them, especially when there's a big storyline going on. I know it's only a bit of fun but to me it seems like they're taking it far too seriously - after all, it's not real! If people only spent as much time talking about current affairs we'd all be much better informed!"

Gwen: "I think certain people do talk about soap operas too much. It could be that they don't have much going on in their own life, so they find the soaps more interesting to talk about!"

Bernie: "But that's why the soaps are so popular - they're a real talking point. It's something to chat about and bond over with friends and colleagues at work."
