November 2011... On the Couch

Do we care more about our rights than our responsibilities?

Kirsty Kirsty Armstrong-Booth, 31- A fitness instructor from Mansfield, Kirsty says people are raised not to take responsibility for their actions

Kate Kate Sweeney, 40 - A personal injuries lawyer from Wigan who’s married with two children, Kate  says society’s selfish attitude comes from how the country is being managed

Susan Susan Dukes, 60 - Lives in Brough with her husband and has a son. She thinks people in small communities still care about their responsibilities, unlike large towns

Three readers discuss the moral issues involved with balancing what we do for others with what we expect for ourselves in today’s me, me, me society

Do people even know what their responsibilities are?

Kirsty: “Some do – and I’d hazard a guess that they’re the ones who’ve been brought up to be responsible. They’re the ones who will always try to do the right thing, whether it’s cleaning up after their dog, trying to reduce their carbon footprint or bringing up their own children to be responsible citizens. However, I think these people are in a minority. Sadly an increasing number don’t bother because they’re either too lazy or they think it’s up to someone else.”

Susan: “I think it has a lot to do with where you live. A lot of people, particularly those who live in villages where there’s more community spirit, do still care about their responsibilities and get frustrated by those who don’t. If you live in a city, I suspect there is no motivation to take care of where you live because it’s so impersonal.”

Kate: “We’ve got to a point now where some people don’t take responsibility for anything, even things that benefit them, like their health. They’ll say it’s not their fault if they develop diabetes even if they’re severely overweight.”
