September 2011... On the Couch

Should marriage be for a fixed term rather than for life?

This month we ask three readers whether they think wedding vows should be renewed after a set period or if marriage should continue in the same way...

Danielle

Danielle Roper, 36
- Manchester-based teacher Danielle is in a new relationship and hopes to get married one day. She thinks wedding vows should really be made for life.

Denise Sept 11
Denise Pickup, 55
- Counsellor Denise lives in Norfolk with her husband of 34 years. She thinks marriage should
be a contract that comes up for review every 25 years.

Adam Sept 11
Adam Shaw, 38
- Adam is single and lives in St Albans. He thinks marriage isn't necessary in today's society and believes the law should be simpler for those wanting a divorce.

Does marriage still have a place in today's society?

Denise: "I think it does but perhaps our idea of what marriage means needs to change. I think that some people have an idealistic view of marriage and believe it requires little effort, but when they tie the knot they find out that's not the case."

Adam: "For me, marriage just isn't an option. I have no religious tendencies and don't believe I need a piece of paper to prove I love someone. To have a place in society, marriage needs to be revamped. I lived in Australia and over there you have to go to pre-marriage counselling, which is a great idea because you're making sure that you are right for each other before you've made the commitment."

Danielle: "I know it sounds old-fashioned but because it has now become so acceptable to not get married, I think it's a mark of a man's respect for a woman if he proposes. I know a lot of men who think they can live with a woman and have a relationship with her without making any effort to get married. But it's more important than ever for a man to make that commitment."
