Winter Family Health Guide
Winter is a time when everyone's health suffers and if you are concerned about your family, then taking a few minutes to read the following article, a family health guide which will give you some helpful hints and tips to keep everyone in good shape.
Eating right
A good diet is essential if you are to keep all of the family fit and healthy this winter. This is sometimes easier said than done, particularly in winter; where there is a temptation to comfort eat. This is due to the fact that we naturally feel more depressed than usual in winter, which encourages us to eat fatty and sugary foods, which make us feel better. While there is nothing wrong with these types of foods every now and again, it is important to ensure that you are not over-indulging.
To combat this, visit your GP for advice on ways to combat SAD
(Seasonal Affective Disorder) and replace unhealthy snacks with
fruit instead and visit our healthy family
recipes section for some inspiration on what to cook at this
time of year.
Don't neglect exercise
When it is cold and dark, the last thing you will probably feel like doing is exercise. It is important, however, that you get regular exercise in order to stay fit and healthy. One of the easiest ways to do this is by joining a gym, which will not only benefit your health, but also give you something do on these cold, dark nights.
Dress sensibly
Making sure that all of the family are wrapped up warm will ensure that they are protected from infection. When the body is cold, it is more prone to viruses which is why it important to wear a warm winter coat when out and about, as well as hats, scarves and gloves.
Prevent the risk of infection
There are several ways in which you can prevent the spread of harmful viruses this winter. These include:
Remember tissues - Remembering to pack some tissues with you wherever you go will allow you to catch germs and contain them, before they have a chance to spread.
Wash your hands - Making sure that you wash your hands as often as possible is vital in ensuring that you kill the germs which cause colds and viruses. You should wash thoroughly with soap and hot water whenever you feel this is necessary.
Hand sanitising gel - Hand sanitising gel is an effective way of
killing germs when it is not possible to wash your hands. Keeping a
handy travel-sized bottle with you when out and about can ensure
that you protect yourself and the kids against the germs which you
encounter in your day to day activities.
