It's not easy being a Father, with all of the pressures of modern living often making it difficult to find the time, or having the knowledge to know how to react to certain issues that this responsibility throws up. Taking a few minutes to read the following, however, will identify some of the things you need to bear in mind.
A great source of fathers advice is friends and family who have been in a similar situation to yours, they should be able to offer you an insight into how they have coped with the pressures of fatherhood and how to deal with a certain issue or problem.
For first time Dads, the prospect of being a father can be a daunting prospect; however with the right fathers advice, you can cope with, and enjoy, this very special change in your life. Before becoming a father, you should accept that your life will change in a number of ways. You won't have the same freedom and spare time that you have previously enjoyed and you will have the responsibility for this new life. It is only by accepting this that you can be a good father.
You should also appreciate that the labour is difficult time for
the child's mother and do as much as you can to help and
support her through this process. Attending antenatal classes, for
example, should not be exclusively for the baby's mother.
Father's too will gain a lot from this experience and it will
help you to show your support for your partner and what they are
going through.
One of the most important elements in being a good father is to
strike an effective balance between your home and working life.
With the pressures that many men find themselves under in the
modern workplace, this is easier said than done, however many
modern employers are increasingly willing to accommodate the needs
of modern dad.
If your current role does not allow for flexibility in terms of
working hours, then it may be worth considering a career change or
career break. It is increasingly common for men to become
'house husbands' and this could be an option for you,
particularly if you have an ambitious partner. It is thought that
there are around 100,000 thousand stay-at-home Dads in the UK. You
shouldn't, however, think that this is a soft option. Many
house husbands have commented on how difficult childcare can be,
although it is found to be much more rewarding than a conventional
job.
Looking after children can leave you with very little free time to yourself so finding a babysitter every now and then can give you some valuable time to spend with your partner or catching up with work or chores around the house. Don't be ashamed or afraid to ask for help from friends and family, in many cases, you'll find that people will be only too happy to help.
