This week I've spent a lot of time job hunting online. I've
registered with numerous websites including Blackpool and
Lancashire Council, the NHS and seven recruitment agencies. I have
gone through the "if it wasn't for the Army" thought
process. Then I have moved on to the "I hate the Army
stage". Marrying Action Man and moving to Cyprus 12 years ago
was all so exciting. And in my excitement I got pregnant soon after
we got married. Then I got pregnant again. I didn't seem to
learn the first time. I then moved another ten times. Now for the
first time in years I have time to myself to think about what I
want to do work wise for the next 25 years.
Moving every two years or less looks very bad on a CV. Recruitment
agencies don't know what BFPO addresses are. I used to have a
career! I used to have work clothes and high heels and go out for
lunch. Admittedly it was only to Boots to get a sandwich... but
still. Sometimes I had after-work drinks - these were usually a bad
move after the third gin and tonic. Now I just drink wine by myself
tidying up toys and spending far too much time on Facebook.
Before I even apply for jobs I have to think about childcare,
breakfast clubs, holiday cover, what if the children are sick. The
costs soon add up. Action Man has never been home for tea time or
bath time and he most definitely cannot do the school run.
Of course being an army wife and a full-time mother is a job in
itself. I have spent a great deal of my time bringing up Heather
and James alone. Today we spent a wet and windy Sunday afternoon at
a local farm. The smell reminded me that I really do prefer towns
and cities and we had to keep washing our hands. Tucker the
Shetland pony tried to eat my jacket and Heather asked if she could
have five pet mice. Two pigs kept snorting, the goats were very
frisky and the sweet little calves made me consider becoming a
vegetarian.
On a positive note, I can honestly say that in five weeks when
Action Man is back I will be going through the "I love the
Army stage" again and all will be forgiven.
