Stunning scenery - Seven nights seeing Italy’s beautiful lakes

Spend seven nights seeing Italy's beautiful lakes, from £699. Depart between May and October 2010

Italy's second largest lake, Lago Maggiore, stretches north from Lombardy and up into Switzerland. Sheltered by the south side of the Alps it enjoys a mild climate that creates the perfect habitat for lush vegetation of Mediterranean and exotic flora. On this holiday, you'll also visit Lake Como and Lake Lugano, which, like Lake Maggiore, are beautiful and scenic.

Our base is the town of Arona, the lake's largest port, from where boats and steamers traverse the lake on a regular basis. Don't miss the magnificent Borromean Palace on Isola Bella, and the Villa Taranto, with its wonderful garden.

There is an included full-day excursion to the 'Three Lakes'. 
We start by driving north up Lake Maggiore, passing the resorts of Stresa and Baveno, as well as Isola Bella. We then cross into Switzerland at Locarno. From Locarno it's less than an hour to 
our second lake, Lake Lugano, then it's over to Lake Como.

There are two optional excursions (at extra cost) that go from Arona to Lake Orta and to Macugnaga 
and Monte Rosa.

Lake Orta is just over a mile wide and ten miles long, and very pretty. You will take the boat to San Giulio Island, which features a 12th century church named in honour of the Greek Evangelist who is said to have rid the beautiful island of its snakes and monsters.

On the second excursion, the resort of Macugnaga stands in splendid scenery at the foot of Western Europe's second highest mountain, Monte Rosa. At over 4,300ft, the town is nearly as high 
as the summit of Ben Nevis. Monte Rosa itself peaks at over 15,000ft, just across the Swiss border.
