A couple of nights on the Riviera allows time to see the opulence that has made the region so famous. The elegant boutiques on the Croisette in Cannes or the busy Promenade des Anglais in Nice are both ideal spots to just pass the time of day in a pavement cafe and watch the world go by. A full-day excursion is included, saving you €40, so you can explore the atmospheric old port of Antibes and continue through the rolling provencal hills to the perfume town of Grasse.

Just a few miles across the border into Italy is the town of San Remo. A novel way of getting there is by train high into the Alps to the mountain village of Tende. A pleasant stroll through the narrow streets past its old churches or a visit to the museum together with a spot of lunch is a relaxing way to spend time here. Then head back down the Italian side of the mountains to San Remo, via an undiscovered jewel of the region, the village of Dolceacqua where the old town is separated from the new town and linked by a bridge painted by the renowned artist, Monet.

The bustling principality of Monaco is just 35 minutes away, and the introduction of a railway in 1860 and the building of the casino transformed Monte Carlo into the tourist hotspot that it is today. A couple of day trips from San Remo are also recommended.

The first is along the coast to Portofino, the colourful harbour and the site of summer residences of many of Italy's elite. The second 
is to the Hanbury Gardens at La Mortola, where the variety of flora is astounding.
