TV broadcaster
and writer, Anne Diamond, debates why we, as a nation, seem to take
such issue with fat people and asks, if we fail to be supportive
and compassionate, how will the problem ever be remedied?
My one rule in life is to regret nothing! Looking back over the past few years, and my rather well-publicised battle with weight, I am very tempted however, to wish I'd never taken part in that awful programme, Celebrity Fit Club.
They sold the idea to me stressing its teamship, and the fantastic quality of their expert weight loss advice. I hated every minute of it though and kept smiling, even at the end when they booted me off, after I confessed to having a gastric band operation several months before. Though the gastric band obviously wasn't working - as I wasn't losing any weight! Only on my way home did I understand what I had done. I had beaten myself up yet again in the belief that fat is something which must be punished, I had let fat turn me into a victim and allowed the scorn of others to define me as a "pathetic fattie", and was judging myself by their values.
