This month
self-made millionaire businessman and Dragon's Den
favourite Duncan Bannatyne asks, if tobacco companies aren't to
blame for public health and childhood going up in smoke in Africa,
then who is?
My documentary for the BBC, Bannatyne takes on big tobacco, was an eye-opening experience. I wanted to expose how British cigarette companies market products to children in Africa with the aim of turning them into loyal customers of the future. It left me shocked, appalled and desperately sorry for Africa's children.
I have to say, loudly and clearly, tobacco companies do not sell cigarettes to children. I know this because during the documentary, they told me they do not sell cigarettes to children. They also have very aggressive lawyers and made it clear I could be sued if not careful about how I worded my statements.
