Renowned actor
and proud grandfather, Kiefer Sutherland reveals to Gabrielle
Donnelly the highs and lows of his award-winning career
Donald Sutherland has a favourite story he likes to tell about his son, Kiefer."We were living in Los Angeles when he was 18 or 19, and he came into my bedroom and said, 'Dad, I have to do an audition tomorrow. Can I do it for you now?' I went cold - there's nothing more terrifying in the world than having your son do an audition before you. But he was absolutely wonderful. I was so relieved! And then he said, 'Well, no, that's how they want me to do it. Can I show you how I want to do it instead?' And he was even better!"
It's a sweet story. A touching episode in the lives of a father and son, a young man seeking his dad's approval, and the older man passing the baton on to his son, watching with pride as talent carries on down through the generations.
"OK, let me correct this," Kiefer, 41, interrupts me when I remind him of the episode. He is laughing so hard he can hardly speak. "You want to hear what really happened? First off, he's mixing up two stories here. I didn't walk into his room and offer up a sample of my work for him. That never happened - what did happen was that when I was about 16, I was auditioning for a film he was in, Max Dugan Returns. He made me do my audition piece in front of him first, because he didn't want me to embarrass us both!
"The other bit about doing the audition two different ways, that really happened, but it happened a couple of years later for Stand By Me. I went to audition for Rob Reiner, I was 18 and didn't know any better, and I said to Rob, 'Let me do this speech two ways. It's obvious it was written to be read this way, but I think that you can maybe take it a step further and try it another way.' I realised I'd really overstepped the boundaries, because I'll never forget the look on his face! Anyway, I did it both ways, and he actually hired me on the spot. But I have to tell you, after the look he gave me, it was the last time I tried anything like that!"
