Young people need support when unemployed

People trying to give parental advice to their children need to make sure they pay special attention to any recent graduates who are out of work and struggling to find employment, according to one expert.

Sarah Brennan, chief executive of YoungMinds, said that young people need skills which will help them cope with periods of unemployment in the difficult jobs market.

"Young people need to be given the skills to cope with the depressing prospect of not finding work, so that they aren't sitting at home anxious and depressed about their futures," she stated.

Ms Brennan added that lack of work can bring not only financial hardship but also emotional stress, as young people do not get the socialising benefits which the work environment brings.

The Prince's Trust YouGov Youth Index 2010 showed recently that unemployed young people are also more likely to feel ashamed, rejected and unloved more of the time.
