Long-term targets are crucial for dieters

People putting together healthy family recipes should try and set themselves long-term targets when dieting, according to one expert, who said that short-term goals are good but not effective enough.

Ursula Arens, a registered dietician and BDA spokesperson, said that setting realistic aims when starting a diet can give people something to look forward to and remain focused on.

"Certainly short-term goals are the things that motivate you day in and day out, but a really long-term change of eating habits and lifestyle is what will be successful," she stated.

The expert added that people should have a monthly goal to hit, rather than getting caught up in weekly or even daily targets.

People coming up with healthy family recipes could be helping their brood avoid getting cancer, according to Dr Rachel Thompson, science programme manager from the World Cancer Research Fund, who said that eating the right foods can help people stay cancer-free.
