Family life: Waterway holidays are booming

More people are trying to enhance their family life by trying out a holiday on an inland waterway, according to one expert who said that the trend has coincided with an increase in staycations.

Howard Pridding, executive director at the British Marine Federation (BMF), said that the inland waterways industry has been one of the most resilient sectors in the British tourism market.

"Often despite the marketing that we do, the inland waterways are a hidden asset to this country and once people discover them they continue to take a holiday," he stated.

The expert added that many companies who provide canal breaks have seen numbers grow by around 15 per cent in the last 12 months as more families give waterways a try.

Recent research from the BMF showed that that revenue rose by 1.9 per cent to £3.16 billion in the inland waterways tourism market, with more people taking to the canals.
