More older people are including video games in their family life, according to one expert who said that they enjoy competing against friends in a safe environment.
Andrew Harrop, head of public policy for Age Concern and Help the Aged, said that modern consoles like the Nintendo Wii have become particularly popular with older people who enjoy the challenges.
"Using a wide range of technologies can have a positive and stimulating effect on peoples' mental and wider wellbeing, so it's good to see older people crossing the digital divide and having a go at gaming," he stated.
The expert added that the more interactive types of console have proved so popular that there will be a 'digi Olympics' held this year which will see older people play against each other.
MyVoucherCodes.co.uk recently released a survey on older people's attitude to games which found that 25 per cent said they played a game of some kind every day.
