People who are forced to live together despite having problems in their family life should do their best to get on and make the most of a difficult situation, according to one expert.
Paula Hall, a relationship psychotherapist, said that in the current recession less people are able to take breaks from each other because they cannot afford to live apart.
"What couples who are facing relationship issues need to do in that [situation] is to sit down and try and collaborate and negotiate on how they can make continuing to live together more harmonious," she stated.
The expert also recommended that couples try to manage their emotions more effectively by using more outlets, possibly by talking to friends about their problems more often.
In a survey by Shelter, nearly a quarter of people - the equivalent of 9.9 million adults - said they or someone they know have had to stay living with their partner because they cannot afford to live on their own.
