The barriers for parents trying to get their children into a faith school are sometimes far too rigorous and Draconian, according to one expert, who said that admission rules put pressure on family life.
Dr Rob Berkeley, director of the Runnymede Trust, said that the admission procedures in place at some schools are effectively segregating children on the basis of their faith, even though they are publicly funded.
"The 'right pupils' for a faith school should not just be those who share a particular faith. While the School Admissions Code is a welcome step in the right direction it still allows schools to discriminate on the basis of faith," he said.
Dr Berkeley added that publicly-funded schools should be there for all the community rather than a selected few.
Ofsted recently stated that independent faith schools give pupils a strong sense of personal worth and help them understand the importance of being a good citizen.
