Retirement age scrappage 'overdue'

The government's plans to scrap the retirement age are long overdue, according to one expert, who said that older people need to be supported if they want to work for longer.

Family life could be altered by the changes, said pensions expert, Dr Ros Altmann, who believes a similar move should have been implemented years ago.

"I'm not telling anyone that we have to force people to work longer, we have to facilitate it but at the moment policy works against it. What Harriet [Harman] has said is something that we should have done a long time ago," he stated.

The expert added that the state pension is not enough to sustain a "decent lifestyle", so working past retirement is an option many older people are forced to take anyway.

In other news, the government is in the process of putting through the Equality Bill, which could alter and extend the law covering 'protected characteristics', such as age and gender.
