Healthy family recipes need to be in lunchboxes

Only around one per cent of children in the UK have a lunchbox which would pass the tough nutritional standards that have been set for their classmates on school meals, according to new research.

A team from the University of Leeds found that 82 per cent of parents send their children to school with a meal that contains foods which are high in saturated fats, which could interest parents wanting to create healthy family recipes.

Charlotte Evans, of the Leeds Institute of Genetics, Health and Therapeutics, said: "The lack of equivalent food standards for packed lunches gives cause for concern that they will continue to lag behind the nutritional quality of school meals."

Sian Porter, dietician and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, recently said that most people are unaware that most foods consumed already contain the recommended amount of salt.
