Ombudsman would not be beneficial for consumers

One of the UK's leading trade associations believes there is no need for a watchdog to look over supermarkets, which could interest people concerned with consumer advice.

Richard Dodd, the head of media and campaigns of the British Retail Consortium BRC, said that a supermarket ombudsman could work against the interest of customers.

"It will be the first case of an ombudsman being introduced where they will work against the interest of customers. All it will do is help major multinational food suppliers by skewing the balance of power in the negotiations between supermarkets in their favour," he stated.

The expert added that the implementation of the figure would ultimately lead to higher prices for consumers, rather than better scrutiny of supermarkets.

In other news, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills recently said that the new ombudsman would help to strike a fair deal between farmers and supermarkets.
