People giving parental advice to children deciding which subjects to study at school are doing the right thing, according to one expert, who said youngsters need help when specialising.
Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, said that parents should have the right to guide their children as they choose their courses, because they do not have the experience to make informed decisions.
"Children don't have the knowledge or experience to decide what they should be learning, or how, in schools. It should be a matter for parents and teachers who probably have a better idea of what is required," he said.
The expert added that some children's expectations of school are way out and could give them an education which is not up to scratch.
In other news, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers recently found that 40 per cent of people feel that student behaviour has gotten worse in the past two years, while 58 per cent believe it has deteriorated over the past five years.
