Family life: Flexibility is more common in wedding dates

More people are thinking laterally about when and where they get married, according to one expert, who said that couples are less obsessed with a traditional June wedding.

Cathy Howes, deputy editor of You and Your Wedding magazine, said this important part of family life is being approached with a new flexibility not seen before.

"We are finding that couples are becoming more flexible about seasons. They are not so fixated on the June marquee wedding, but can see the attraction of a crisp white winter wedding with lots of candlelight," she said.

Autumn dates are also popular with couples, according to the editor, who said that Fridays are overtaking Saturdays as the day of choice for lovers.

Research from Ecclesiastical showed that January is the least popular time of the year to get married in the UK, with the first two weekends of the month being virtually a wedding-free zone.
