One part of family life which can be hard for youngsters is the transition from primary school to secondary and an expert said that the institutes should do more to make the change over easier.
John Coe, general secretary of the National Association for Primary Education (NAPE), said that dividing pupils of mixed ability as soon as they get to secondary school can be a bit of a shock to youngsters who are not used to it.
"The children are used to working in mixed-ability classes and to be confronted within the first term or so by segregated teaching in streams or possibly rigid setting is likely to lower performance," he stated.
Early testing is another idea that the NAPE secretary does not agree with and he thinks children should be allowed to settle down.
A recent study by the University of Bristol showed that while many children sail through the move to secondary school, others lack the emotional resilience required to handle the adjustment well.
