Consumer advice: Fraudsters are more sophisticated

People looking for some consumer advice could heed the words of one expert who believes that internet fraudsters are getting more sophisticated.

Alan Phillips, chief executive of 7Safe, said that being aware of the threats which some hackers and troublemakers pose is very important.

"The early days of phishing were littered by poor spelling and grammar, as well as not-so-realistic web sites. As users became more savvy, the fraudsters had to up their game," he said.

He added that people should be suspicious of email requests for personal info and not click on links to websites they do not know.

The Get Safe Online Report 2009, UK Internet Security: State of the Nation, recently revealed that around 60 per cent of people use the internet for financial management.

It added that while the potential threat landscape for mobile devices is still emerging, there are some indications that greater security vigilance is required.
