Consumer advice: Online will dominate retail sales

People concerned with consumer advice are going online for their shopping needs, according to one expert, who said that the UK is set up perfectly to be an internet shopping hotspot.

David Smith, director of operations at the Interactive Media in Retail Group, claimed that the accessibility of credit in the country means people can shop online whenever they wish.

He said: "A lot of the big high street names are now going online and there is a lot there from a consumer point of view because they are shopping with traditional high street brands."

The expert added that ever since the advent of broadband, the trend for online shopping has grown significantly and given consumers more chance to respond to brands and products.

Mr Smith's comments followed research for Kelkoo, conducted by the Centre for Retail Research, which showed that UK shoppers spent more online than those in Europe last year.
