The image of avocados as an indulgent fruit are out-dated and not accurate, according to one newspaper, which said that they are more suited to healthy family recipes than some other produce.
A report in the Times suggested that half a medium avocado contains around 132 calories, which is less than the amount in 100g of houmus or 50gs of pumpkin seeds.
"You also gain on the nutritional front because avocados give us a plant compound called beta-sitosterol. With a similar structure to cholesterol, like the phytosterols added to yoghurts and spreads that lower cholesterol," it stated.
The publication added that vitamin B and vitamin D can also be found in the fruit, both of which help with the bodies nerves and circulation.
Dr Caitlin Palframan, policy manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said that more research needs to be done into the affects of pomegranate juice on the human body before it can be confirmed as an effective oncology tool.
