Playing 'is a crucial part of a child's family life'

It is important that children have the opportunity to play as they take part in family life, according to one expert, who said this encourages development and helps them learn from their mistakes.

Doreen Jones, senior parent support co-ordinator at Parentline Plus, said that spending time with children shows them they are loved and helps them to understand concepts like behavioural rewards.

"It allows children to make mistakes and find solutions, building their confidence and self esteem. It allows children to build up a positive picture of themselves through parents praising achievements, this encourages children to learn how to self praise," she stated.

The expert added that playing also helps youngsters to build relationships with other children and adults.

A recent study from the External Regulation to Self-Regulation: Early Parenting Precursors of Young Children's Executive Functioning showed that the way mothers act when playing with kids can influence their development.
