Family health: Predicting cancer responses is crucial step
Being able to predict the way someone will respond to cancer treatment would be a great leap forward in understanding the disease, according to one expert.
Dr Rob Glynne Jones, expert advisor at Bowel Cancer UK, said that recent research from the University of Dundee has identified genetic hotspots for bowel cancer is interesting and could help doctors treat the condition more effectively.
"One of the things which has been our dream as cancer specialists is to find ways that can predict what treatments will respond, and won't respond," he said.
The expert added that one of the main problems with cancer is that it is heterogeneous and makes it very difficult for doctors to predict how a patient will react to certain types of treatment.
According to Cancer Research UK, each year more than 37,500 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the country.
