Family life: Boiler scheme must be extended

The current boiler scrappage scheme needs to be extended, according to one expert, who said that at present it does not reach enough homeowners.

Gordon Miller, founder of whatgreenhome.com, said that the project could be very successful but needs to be based around incentives so it appeals to as many homeowners as possible.

"People will always react to money; that is the main driver for the CO2 argument. You have got to incentivise people. Lots of people will think: 'I'm all for this. I want to do my bit for the environment, but not at a cost to myself'," he claimed.

The expert added that people who take part in the scheme will essentially be given an interest-free loan by the government to pump into energy-efficient improvements.

In other news, the government recently announced that 54,758 vouchers, which is just over 43 per cent of the total, have been used under the boiler scrappage scheme.
